Main: Conventions of EDM

Main: Conventions of EDM

The Electronic Dance Music genre is about music that doesn't tell a narrative in its videos. They are mainly about showing vast numbers of fans packed into a small venue with lots of flashing lights. Showing off their concerts is more appealing to the audience and promotes the gigs which the artists perform.

The face of EDM are mainly young adults (20-30) which will be the target audience for this genre. The music appeals to the younger audience more than an older audience which are not expected to listen to this genre of music. Most photos show the packed venue with the DJ performing, or a profile photo of the artist on a plain background. The clothing which is worn by the EDM DJs is very simple and it doesn't matter the big brands being on show for the audience to see.

Some other conventions of EDM:
Summarised
Upbeat videos
Narrative not usually connected with lyrics
Lots of dancing and routines
Club/party scenes
Bright colours

Codes and Conventions of Genres

Metalcore:

Metalcore is a sub-genre of rock which involves guitars and drums but there is a lot more screaming at the top of your lungs and rough guitar which are accompanied by usually dark lyrics. Most people who listen to metal music are quickly judged as someone that you would avoid because of the modern-day stereotypical look/image that has been set for metal can look quite threatening to others. The look that modern-day metal bands have is usually tattoos, piercings, stretched ears, skinny jeans, vests, VANS shoes and long hair. The colours worn by the members of the bands tend to be colours that are neutral like: black, white, grays and if wearing a colour like blue or green it will be faint or washed out.

Bring Me The Horizon

The target audience of metalcore is anyone who enjoys playing the guitar, drums or screaming at the top of their lungs, as most people who listen to this music most likely can play an instrument or sing themselves, so most of the visuals like pictures and music videos will not necessarily be related to the lyrics and tell the story of the lyrics but will be of either the guitarist or drummer playing their instrument or of the vocalist singing as these are what the audience like to see more so than a story. However some of the clips used in the music videos have a relation to the lyrics being sung.

EDM:

EDM is a genre that is composed of lots of other sub-genres and each one has its own style, however there are similarities that they all share which causes them to fall under EDM. Some of the sub-genres in EDM are: Techno, Electronica, Dubstep, House, Drum and Bass, Jungle and Trance. Clothing wise the typical look for a DJ that makes EDM music is a short back and sides and longer top haircut, pankts that are usualy black and incredibly baggy and a top that stretches past the waist down the leg, colour wise blacks, grays and whites are usually worn but since they wear big named brands such as Nike and Adidas their clothing colour pallet is not limited.

The target audience of and sub-genre of EDM is mainly men aimed 20-30 years old that is why in many music videos in this genre there are women that are basically wearing nothing in the music videos and are represented as a sexual object rather than a person as this is what catches the attention of the selected target audience.

Pop:

Pop music often follows the Goodwin theory which is that the music video is an illustration of the lyrics. The artists often wear designer labels which suggests wealth, the outfits women usually wear are tight and revealing which shows off their body figure such as bikinis or high heels and short skirts, which catches the male audiences' eye (the male gaze). The artists often wear clothing of a bright colour to match the upbeat feel that the music has.

Katy Perry

The target audience for pop is usually teenage girls so in the music videos the artist is usually wearing alot of makeup to make her look attractive and catch the audiences' eye so they try to be like her, however the way the artist dresses catches the eye of the male viewers as what the artist wears can offten be very little.
