Main: Photographer Research

The pictures below are taken by Drew Ressler, for some of my photos I would like to have images like these they would be mainly to fill up space on the contents page / to go along side article titles.

For my main image on my cover page I would like a image that is a bit more plain, meaning a image that don't have a complex background, I just want one solid colour or a mixture of two or three and the artist looking into the camera. This way if the background is not too complex them it puts a greater focus on the image of the artist and the titles so you can clearly see what the issue is mainly about.

For my article I want an image like the one below this is almost a mixture of the two, it has the artist looking into the camera and posing in some way and the background isn't too complex. With an image like this I can place the artist to one side of the 2 pages and continue the background through onto the other page so it makes the two pages of the article look as if they are one

Main: Costume/Prop Planning

Main: Costume/Prop Planning

Hair:
Below are two possibilities as to what type of hair style I would like my artist to have one is from a 80s singer called Pete Burns from the band Dead or Alive and the other is a more modern artist: Elly Jackson from the band La Roux. These are two very different hair styles but they both have the feel of the 80s in them one slightly more so than the other; Pete Burns hair style is straight out of the 80s however Elly's is more of a evolution of the 'A Flock Of Seagulls' haircut a  evolution that was for the best. Oddly enough these types of hair styles have come back into fashion in recent years for men just with slight twist so I feel that if I use one of these types of hairstyles it will catch the eye of someone in the modern era who likes this type of hair style.

Clothing:
For clothing I'd like to have the artist in possibly a black suit jacket but it doesn't necessarily have to be a suit jacket they are in another possibility would be a black trench coat. They could possibly have a trench coat on because in the 80s in England trench coats were quite the popular. As for the possibility of the suit that came from the 80s dance band the Eurythmics who in nearly all their band photos they are wearing a suit.

Suit Jacket (Eurythmics):

Pants:

For pants I am considering twopossibilities, they are all the colour black however they are different styles of pants which are harem pants or Jeans. I am leaning more towards the harem pants for the selected option because of McHammer, in the 80s after McHammer released his song 'Can't Touch This' Harem pants became surprisingly popular. The Jeans are just something that was in fashion in the 80s and a lot of people wore so it wouldn't be uncommon to see a band wearing them.

Harem Pants:

Top:

For the top that the artist will be wearing there are quite a few possibilities, in the 80s tops with writing on them were quite popular (especially the Frankie Says Relax top) so a plain whit top with some text is one possibility or even a plain white top with a simple pattern on it that is black. Other possibilities are just plain tops in different colours; red, blue, white, grey and possibly black. The option I like the sound of the most and think would go best with the rest of the outfit is just a plain white top under.

Shoes:

For the shoes I have decided that I am going to use black ankle boots as these were what a lot of men worn in the 80s so if my artist is a male it would only make sense as he will be following the fashion sense that was set at the time.

Main: Moodboard

Main: Moodboard

From the images that I gathered for my mood board that I am going to base the photos of my magazine off, I think to have the correct look for the 80s; the photo should have a slight blur on it or it should be in black and white; as most of the images above are like this. However for the front cover I don't think that having a black and white main image is very effective so the main image on the front cover will be most likely a picture with a slight blur on it, for the two page spread I will possibly use a black and white image and for the contents page I will use a combination of the two.
All of the pictures on my mood board and other photos that I decided not to use are mostly Mid-Shots or close up on the artists face, so I will make sure that my photos are either close ups or Mid-Shots.

Main: Colour Scheme Ideas

Main: Colour Scheme Ideas

After looking at the Colour Schemes of other EDM/Dance Magazines I noticed that there was three colours that come up a lot, two of these colours were obviously Black and White these two are used because they stand out from each other so well so it is obvious that I will be using these in all of my Colour Scheme possibilities.

Cover Page:

The Cover Pages of the magazines that I looked at had a swatch of five or more colours so for my contents page I would like to use not necessarily five different colours like Red, Blue. Green and White but I want to use different shades and tints of a specific colours. So for my front cover the colours a plan on using are Black, White, Pinks and Purples.

Contents Page:

For the contents pages i looked at the main colours used are mainly Black and White, with a hint of a few other colours that are used as a background behind the subtitles of a section. So depending on how many sections I have will determine how many colours I end up using, I plant to limit myself at five maximum though. For the colours I will be using for my contents page will mainly be black and white just to keep in a similar theme to the rest with a small hint of other colours.

2 Page Spread:

For my two page spread I will be using colours that are the same as the colours that are on the front cover, as the colours on the cover page will be related to the artist so the colour of the artist (Black, White, Pinks, Purples) will be on the two page spread

Main: Gender representation

Main: Gender Representation

Throughout the music industry women are represented in many different ways, in Pop women are shown to be powerful people, in Metal women tend to be represented just like men and in classical/opera women are represented almost as goddesses. Most of these genres of music represent women as strong, independent characters however women wh have appeared in EDM videos are represented very differently, in EDM women are mainly shown to be objects to appeal to the male eye to attract more views and attention, more so than actual people. This is done through the display of attitude and what they wear. In music videos such as the ones below it is clear to see that the way the female dances dress is aimed completely towards men, also the facial expressions that the ladies in the videos make contribute towards the attraction of the target male audience this goes hand in hand with their posture or the way they are dancing. The women in EDM videos are presented in all of the way above to replicate the attraction of a 'Private Dancer'.

Fredde Le Grand - Put Your Hands Up For Detroit

However although women in the music videos may be represented like this in music videos, the lesser know female artists that are gradually making a name for themselves in EDM and are artists/DJs and not dancers or collab-vocalists are represented in a completely different way. Instead of the stereotypical look that appeals to the male eye which we see in many EDM music videos with the women wearing very little, these artists go completely against that. They wear normal (or what is classed as normal in the modern age) everyday clothes which males still find to be attractive clothing that is associated with the genre without them wearing next to nothing when preforming because of this these artists/DJs are seen to be strong, independent characters who are known for their music and still have their appeal to the male audience eye because of their stature in a male dominated genre.

Maya Jane Coles - EDM artist

Mija - EDM DJ

In EDM the stereotypical sexual appeal in the way that the women dress has been and is gradually fading. As seen above, in the 90's and 00's this stereotype was at its strongest and over the course of the past 10 plus years the focus on the music that the women in EDM make is becoming a bigger focus, taking NERVO as an example.
